Text : The Isla de la Xunqueira del Lérez is situated in the city center, with direct access to it through bridges and footbridges. The island occupies an area of 70.000 square meters, and it is situated in an enclave with a great natural and landscape value, near the Lérez river, declared as Lugar de Importancia Comunitaria (LIC), included in the Red Natura 2000. In this environment, the project Isla de Esculturas de Pontevedra, is the first of this kind developed in Spain, and it’s about transforming the landscape through the current art. Twelve artists were invited to develop specific projects for the island, and each one of them devised a work linked to the landscape, to the place traditions, to the sculptures and stone history, and specially to the mankind essence, and the relation with nature. The stone, present in all the sculptures, the survival of the road as a route and as culture encounter, the idea of freedom and difference, fill the conceptual space of the project. The sculptures are constantly incorporated in the space, being the first Isla de Esculturas of Spain, and one of the few historical international initiatives of similar characteristics. Here important artists, national and international, left their works: Giovanni Anselmo, Fernando Casás, José Pedro Croft, Dan Graham, Francisco Leiro, Richard Long, Robert Morris, Anne& Patrick Poirier.
