Text : The convent of San Salvador de Lérez or San Benito is situated in the Lérez region, where the Portuguese route to Santiago coincides with the Roman road. It was founded in the 10th century by the Benedictine monks. The original building belonged to the Roman style. Today, the church is Neoclassical with a Baroque facade of the 18th century where the image of San Benito can de observed. In the 16th century it housed a humanities and philosophy school, where some important people like Padre Sarmiento and Padre Feijoo studied and taught. In the interior of the church there is the chapel of San Benito, built in 1700, where a beautiful image of the Savior can be observed. There is a famous celebration in honor of San Benito the 11th of July, and every year hundreds of Galicians arrive.
