Pontevedra, river landscape.

Next to the Lérez, a new Pontevedra for pedestrians is emerging. You can take a walk beginning in a Moureira of the Mareantes, and continuing with a pedestrian walkway that will offer you beautiful images.
The Lérez River is the central point of the hydrographical net, as well as the life of the council. Thanks to it, Pontevedra experienced a period of maritime splendour, until the stones and the mud reduced its capacity and the maritime traffic was reduced to small ships. In spite of this, nowadays the Lérez banks house the totality of the capital city activities. The Mareantes guild had their residence here, in the area known as Moureira de Mareantes, today a residential area with modern buildings.
In this place there is also a pedestrian walkway that invites you to take a daily walk. The Barca Bridge is the first you will find, and from it you will be able to observe the modern ships of the inland water yacht dock. The Burgo Bridge is the oldest one, of Roman origin. It served to name the city "Ponte Veteri". Today, it is a necessary step of the Portuguese route to Santiago de Compostela.
Next to the bridge, you will find the new Public Market Square, reformed by architect César Portela. Along with the square, some emblematic buildings can be observed, like the Casa Sarmiento, headquarters of the provincial archive.
The landscape changes at the other side of the river. The exhibition site and the Pazo da cultura are symbols of the modernity in Pontevedra, and centres of the intellectual and artistic activities. Next to these buildings is the park of A Xunqueira, a frequented place by walkers and sportsmen. This park is immersed in the waters of the Alba River, affluent of the Lérez, river that served us as guide to know this new river landscape.
