Monastery of San Xoán de Poio.

We leave Pontevedra a couple of hours to visit one of the most emblematic monuments of the Pontevedra coast, situated in a beautiful hillock with view to the ría.
In the road C-550 to Sanxenxo, leaving Pontevedra through the Barca Bridge, you will see the deviation that will take you directly to the Monastery, situated in a hillock that will allow you enjoy a beautiful landscape of the ría.<
The tradition assigns the foundation of the Monastery to San Fructuoso, and it is known that it already existed in 942. However, is in the 16th century when the monastery lives its biggest period of cultural and building splendour. During this period, the cloister of the Procesiones is built, and in 1548 the Colegio Mayor de Teología (Theology College) is founded, where the famous Padre Feijoó taught. The splendour increases in the 17th century; this allows the construction of the new temple, finished in 1708, as well as the building of the new cloister, the cloister of the Naranjos.
The outstanding collection is actually formed by 2 monasteries: the ancient Benedictine convent, with the church, the transept and the modern cloisters, Mercedarian, with 2 yards and a chapel.
The church, built in the 17th century, reflects the taste for the Classical and Baroque conjunction. On the inside, there is a beautiful altarpiece of the 18th century, belonging to the Churrigueresque style. On the left nave, you can find the grave of Santa Trahamunda.
In the gardens and fields nearby the Monastery of Poio, one of the biggest raised granaries of Galicia is situated.
The monastery possesses one of the most complete libraries of Galicia, with all types of books, many of them unique and of a great value.
